A former coach house where a full-height library had to hold 2,400 books without a visible fixing.
The structural opening ran 6.2 metres with a 400mm deflection allowance in the steel above. The library therefore had to be self-supporting and independent of the ceiling — a torsion-box carcass tied back at four points.
Uprights are 42mm engineered oak, veneer-matched across the run so the figure carries around the corner returns. Lighting is integrated into a machined rebate rather than surface-mounted.
Wall surfaces beyond the library are tadelakt in a warm bone, burnished with a river stone and sealed with olive soap.
A site visit, a written condition note, and an honest answer about what the room needs.
